Wooden Flower

The second turning is a wooden flower. It's made out of walnut & hard maple, both of which were leftover pieces from a project I did ~15 years ago. The stand is a single piece of cherry, made from a branch that was trimmed from a local business. Everything is sanded fine and BLO applied, then wet-sanded with a scotch-brite pad & BLO. No additional finish.

Wood Box

I took a break from restoring the bandsaw and made a couple turnings.

First is a small wooden box. It's by far the smallest I've done, but also turned out to be one of the most finely detailed. I don't know what kind of wood it is - a friend saw some branches on the side of the road and grabbed them for me. Whatever it is, it's MUCH harder than the maple, cedar, and cherry I've been turning lately. I love the dark streak in it too. If anybody has ideas as to what it is, I'd love to hear them. Finished with wipe-on poly.

Wood & Cedar Cups

This is what came out of a small piece of maple branch. I left a small area of the cambium layer intact and it seems solid. I like the effect, plus there's a nice line around that is so close to the surface, it's almost gotta be related to the proximity of the bark.

Here are three similar turnings, all from cedar.

This one's slightly larger, but the most interesting aspect is the 'budweiser crown' formed by the grain coloration on the bottom.

I just did this one tonight, and in fact there's no finish on it when the picture was taken. I love all the knots.

Foot Massagers

These are two that I did for the WoodNet May Challenge.

The first is out of an unknown wood and is quite soft. The difference in wood color between one side and the streak passing through the other is quite striking - almost white to brown.

Here's the second, also made out of an unknown wood, but this one is rock hard. Probably the hardest piece of wood I've ever turned. I roughed it out to round with a gouge, then used only a skew chisel on it to improve my skill with it.
